A List of the AI Answer Engines in 2026 (and What Each One Actually Does)
The AI engines people actually ask questions in, what each one reads, and which of them show their sources. Checked and dated, with the uncertainty left in.
"What AI engines can I use" is a fair question with a moving answer. New surfaces launched this year, old ones changed defaults, and half the write-ups you find were accurate in 2025.
So here is the list as of 2026-07-30, with what each engine reads, whether it shows sources, and where it is worth checking the claim yourself. I work at Citedon, which sells a scan for exactly this problem, so I will tell you up front which of these our scan actually queries and which it does not. That is at the bottom.
What counts as an answer engine
Not every chatbot belongs on this list. The distinction that matters for a site owner is whether the thing reads the live web when it answers.
A model answering only from training data is quoting a memory of the internet. An answer engine fetches pages while it composes, which means today's version of your page is in play, and being readable today changes what it can say about you. That mechanism is retrieval-augmented generation, and it is why structure on your side has any effect at all.
Everything below reads the live web in at least some of its modes.
ChatGPT
OpenAI's assistant is the one most people picture when they picture this category. When it answers from the live web it retrieves a set of pages, reads what it can parse, and composes an answer from that, without showing you ten links first.
It is the engine most likely to be the first place a buyer describes their problem in full sentences. Our profile of how ChatGPT decides what to recommend covers what its reading rewards and what it cannot see.
Claude
Anthropic's assistant can answer from what it learned in training or fetch live pages and answer from those. It also increasingly shows up inside other tools rather than only in its own chat window, which means the answer often happens where someone is already working.

Microsoft Copilot
Copilot retrieves web results, reads the pages behind them, and answers in place, inside Windows, Edge, and Microsoft 365 as well as its own interface. That distribution is the point: your buyer does not have to choose to visit it.
It is related to classic Bing results without being identical to them, and a page can do fine in results while being hard to read cleanly. More in how Microsoft Copilot picks what to surface.
Google Gemini and AI Overviews
Gemini is Google's model, and AI Overviews are the summaries that appear above the traditional results on queries where Google's systems judge them additive. Google states that AI Overviews often do not trigger at all (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, last updated 2025-12-10).
This is the surface where ranking and readability come apart most visibly: you can hold the top organic spot and watch the question get answered above your link. See how Gemini and AI Overviews choose what to show.
Google AI Mode
AI Mode is Google's conversational search surface rather than a box on a results page, and it is the fastest-moving item on this list. Google said in May 2026 that it had passed one billion monthly users and that Gemini 3.5 Flash had become its default model globally (blog.google, "A new era for AI Search", 2026-05-19).
Google also publishes the eligibility bar, which is unusually concrete: to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, with no additional technical requirements (Search Central, last updated 2025-12-10). Perplexity
Perplexity is the engine built around visible sourcing. It retrieves live pages for a question and writes an answer with numbered footnotes back to the pages it used, which makes it the clearest place to watch this whole game played in the open.

Grok
xAI's assistant reads two things at once: live web pages and live posts on X. Its developer docs describe a web search tool that browses pages and extracts information, and a separate X search tool covering keyword, semantic, user, and thread search (docs.x.ai, checked 2026-07-30).
The honest detail worth knowing is xAI's own: enabling inline citations does not guarantee the model will cite sources on every answer, because the model decides when to include them (docs.x.ai, Citations, last updated 2026-07-14). More in how Grok answers and when it links a source.
Others you will run into
These three reach large audiences but we do not publish profiles on them, so take the descriptions as thin on purpose.
Meta AI. Meta describes it as a free assistant usable across WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Facebook, the Meta AI app, and meta.ai (Meta's Google Play listing for Meta AI, checked 2026-07-30). Its reach comes from being where people already are rather than from being a destination.
DeepSeek. DeepSeek publishes free access to its assistant on deepseek.com alongside its models and API (deepseek.com, checked 2026-07-30). How it selects and displays sources is not documented the way Google's guidance is, so we are not going to characterize it.
Mistral le Chat. Mistral says le Chat combines its models' pretrained knowledge with recent information from web search, journalism, and other sources to give evidence-based responses (mistral.ai, "The all new le Chat", checked 2026-07-30).
There are more, including engines built for specific regions and niches. A list that claims to be complete is stale the week it publishes.
What all of them share
The interfaces differ. The floor does not.
Every engine above has to reach your page, and then has to find something in it worth lifting. Reachability is crawling and indexing. Readability is whether the answer exists in plain text, whether the headings tell the truth about the content, and whether structured data labels what the page is instead of leaving the model to infer it.
That is the whole overlap, and it is most of the available work. The rest is ranking logic that none of these companies publish and none of them owe you.
Where Citedon fits, and where it does not
Our scan queries four engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. It does not query AI Mode, Copilot, or Grok. So when we report that engines named you, that finding covers four of the seven above, and I would rather say that than let a logo grid imply otherwise.
What the scan measures beyond that is readiness: whether the page is reachable, whether an engine can extract a clear answer from it, and what structure is missing. Readiness travels across engines in a way that a citation on one of them does not.
We do not promise citations anywhere. No tool can, and the Grok documentation above is a useful reminder of why: an engine can read you accurately and still publish an answer with no link in it.
The fix layer is WordPress-only. On Shopify, Wix, Webflow, or headless, the scan still tells you what is broken and you apply the changes yourself.
How to use this list
Do not build seven strategies. Pick the page you would most want quoted when someone asks about your category, and find out whether a machine can read it at all.
