The practice of shaping a page so the systems that write direct answers, from AI Overviews to chat assistants, can read it, parse what it says, and use it when someone asks.
Search used to hand you a list and let you choose. More and more of it now hands you an answer. Answer engine optimization is the name for optimizing toward that second thing.
What answer engine optimization means
Answer engine optimization, usually shortened to AEO, is the work of shaping a page so the systems that write direct answers can read it, parse what it says, and use it when a question comes up.
An answer engine is any surface that resolves a question in place rather than handing over links: AI Overviews at the top of a results page, AI Mode, a chat assistant, a featured snippet in its older form. The common thread is that a machine reads sources and composes a reply.
AEO is the set of choices that decide whether your page is usable to that machine. Not whether it looks credible to a person, but whether a parser can find your claim, tell what kind of page it is on, and reuse it correctly.
AEO and SEO
They are not opposites, and the fundamentals overlap. Clean titles, quick responses, and a logical site structure serve a human reader and a machine reader alike.
The split is in what each reader tolerates. A person scrolls past a slow intro and infers your point from context. A parser weights what it reads first and may never reach an answer stranded far down the page.
So a page can hold a strong ranking and still read badly to the layer writing the answer. That gap is the whole reason the term exists.
AEO and GEO
The honest version: these are close to the same discipline with two names.
Generative engine optimization is the wider umbrella, covering how generative engines read and reuse a site. AEO leans toward the direct-answer surfaces specifically. Day to day, the work is nearly identical, and the comparison table on the GEO page lays out the three terms side by side.
Treat anyone selling AEO and GEO as separate services with separate price tags with some skepticism. The acronym is not the thing. Whether a machine can read your page is the thing.
What AEO covers
Four layers, in the order they matter.
- Access. If a page is not crawlable, nothing below this line applies. robots.txt and the behavior of individual AI crawlers decide what gets fetched at all.
- Structure. Semantic HTML and a logical heading structure let a parser separate your point from your navigation.
- A stated answer. The claim written in plain text, near the top, in the words someone would actually ask. This is what makes a page machine-readable rather than merely well written.
- Labels. Structured data written as schema markup tells the engine what the page is: an article, a product, an organization, a set of questions. Prose becomes facts a machine can lift.
The sum of the four is agent-readiness, which is simply the state where the machines answering questions can read your site.
What you can measure, and what you cannot
This is where AEO advice usually goes soft, so here is the line.
You can measure readiness. Whether a given URL is reachable, whether each engine can fetch and parse it, which structural pieces are missing, and whether the labels on the page match what the page actually says. Those are facts, checkable on a specific URL today.
You can also measure outcomes after the fact. Whether engines named you when asked a given search prompt, and how that citation pattern moves over time. That is a measurement, not a forecast.
What nobody can promise is the outcome itself. Engines pick their sources probabilistically and change how they do it. Optimization improves how clearly you can be read; being chosen remains the engine's call. Any tool or agency guaranteeing citations, rankings, or traffic is selling a number it cannot control.
What AEO does not fix
Structure makes a real answer legible. It cannot manufacture one that is not there. A well-marked page with nothing worth quoting is still a page with nothing worth quoting.
It is also not a task you finish. Your own pages change as you publish, and engines change how they read. A page that parsed cleanly one quarter can parse poorly the next without you touching it, which is why readiness is maintained rather than closed out.

How to check where you stand
Pick the one page you would most want an engine to quote. Read it the way a parser would: top down, no scrolling charity, looking for a labeled, plain-text answer.
